The indications for this parenchyma-sparing procedure were categorized according to the initial status of the contralateral kidney and included bilateral tumors or tumor in a solitary kidney in 16 patients (mandatory indications), unilateral carcinoma with compromise of the contralateral kidney by a benign disease process in 9 (relative indications) and small peripheral tumor with a normal contralateral kidney in 19 (elective indications). There were 4 recurrences that accounted for 3 deaths, all in patients with mandatory indications. All patients who underwent partial nephrectomy for relative or elective indications were without definite evidence of recurrent disease at last followup (over-all mean 36 months). Our results suggest that conservative surgery can often provide effective and advantageous therapy for renal cancer and we encourage further consideration of the role of partial nephrectomy as an alternative to radical nephrectomy in selected patients with small peripheral tumors and normal contralateral kidneys. © 1991 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByO'Malley R, Godoy G, Kanofsky J and Taneja S (2018) The Necessity of Adrenalectomy at the Time of Radical Nephrectomy: A Systematic ReviewJournal of Urology, VOL. 181, NO. 5, (2009-2017), Online publication date: 1-May-2009.CESTARI A, GUAZZONI G, DELL'ACQUA V, NAVA L, CARDONE G, BALCONI G, NASPRO R, MONTORSI F and RIGATTI P (2018) LAPAROSCOPIC CRYOABLATION OF SOLID RENAL MASSES: INTERMEDIATE TERM FOLLOWUPJournal of Urology, VOL. 172, NO. 4 Part 1, (1267-1270), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2004.UZZO R and NOVICK A (2018) NEPHRON SPARING SURGERY FOR RENAL TUMORS: INDICATIONS, TECHNIQUES AND OUTCOMESJournal of Urology, VOL. 166, NO. 1, (6-18), Online publication date: 1-Jul-2001.WALTHER M, SHAWKER T, LIBUTTI S, LUBENSKY I, CHOYKE P, VENZON D and LINEHAN W (2018) A PHASE 2 STUDY OF RADIO FREQUENCY INTERSTITIAL TISSUE ABLATION OF LOCALIZED RENAL TUMORSJournal of Urology, VOL. 163, NO. 5, (1424-1427), Online publication date: 1-May-2000.VAN POPPEL H, BAMELIS B, OYEN R and BAERT L (2018) PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY FOR RENAL CELL CARCINOMA CAN ACHIEVE LONG-TERM TUMOR CONTROLJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 3 Part 1, (674-678), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1998.WOLF J (2018) EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT OF SOLID AND CYSTIC RENAL MASSESJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 4, (1120-1133), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1998.JANETSCHEK G, DAFFNER P, PESCHEL R and BARTSCH G (2018) LAPAROSCOPIC NEPHRON SPARING SURGERY FOR SMALL RENAL CELL CARCINOMAJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 4, (1152-1155), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1998.Cozzi P, Lynch W, Collins S, Vonthethoff L and Morris D (2018) Renal Cryotherapy in a Sheep Model; A Feasability StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 2, (710-712), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1997.Campbell S, Fichtner J, Novick A, Steinbach F, Stockle M, Klein E, Filipas D, Levin H, Storkel S, Schweden F, Obuchowski N and Hale J (2018) Intraoperative Evaluation of Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Prospective Study of the Role of Ultrasonography and Histopathological Frozen SectionsJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 4, (1191-1195), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1996.Gschwend J, Vogel U, Bader C, Mattfeldt T and Hautmann R (2018) Predictive Value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computerized Tomography for Conservative Renal Surgery in an Ex Vivo Tumor Enucleation Study Followed by Step-SectioningJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 2, (451-454), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1996.
