- W590138065 abstract "The Sarnia Arterial links the Bayhead with the Durban outer ring road and is expected to carry most of the container traffic from Durban Harbour. Concrete construction was selected in spite of higher initial cost, because of expected longer life and lower maintenance costs and because of rutting and deformation of bituminous pavements in Natal carrying high volumes of heavy vehicles. The Sarnia Arterial pavement was designed to carry 6 million repetitions of standard 80 kn axle loads and consists of 250 mm thick, unreinforced concrete surfacing, laid in single lane widths 3.5 m wide. Transverse contraction joints were sawn in the concrete to approximately quarter depth at 4.5 m intervals. The majority of the transverse joints were skewed at 1 to 6 to the normal, but in areas where differential settlement is expected such as at bridge approaches, intersections and at the terminal ends of the concrete pavement, a series of dowelled joints, set normal to the pavement edge have been used. Longitudinal tied and keyed joints have been used between carriageways to provide a warping joint and to prevent parting of the lanes. Both transverse and longitudinal joints have been sealed with neoprene compression seals. Single lane pairing using a sideform paver was carried out. The two bridges across the Umbilo River were surfaced with a 40 mm thick layer of Salviacim, an industrial paving material.
