- W59065590 abstract "Percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy (PTMC) was innovated by Inoue, performing the first procedure in 1982 using a unique balloon catheter system. The balloon is designed to operate somewhat like a pulmonary artery flotation catheter and after it is introduced into the left atrium it can be “floated” into the left ventricle then used to split the fused mitral commissures completely. The availability of percutaneous methods for accomplishing mitral commissurotomy has allowed for broader patient selection than has been traditional for surgical methods. The ease of percutaneous therapy, the relatively traumatic nature of the procedure, and the short hospital stay makes application of mitral commissurotomy to a broad segment of the population of patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis highly feasible. Randomized comparisons of PTMC with both open and closed surgical commissurotomy have demonstrated equivalent acute and long term results. Thus, PTMC is the procedure of choice for the vast majority of patients with mitral stenosis." @default.
