- W59092144 abstract "Despite its hundred-year length, there is still serious debate about the position of women in socialist and capitalist countries. Central to this debate is whether or not socialism surpasses capitalism in providing equality for women. Difference between the position of women under these two systems are examined by using forty-three indicators developed by Boulding, Nuss, Carson and Greenstein (1976) for Europe, the United States, the Soviet Union, Australia and Japan in the areas of economic activity, education, law, politics and social life. In general, the hypothesis that socialism surpasses capitalism in providing significantly higher participation rates for women was supported at the .05 level of significance. Socialist women are more active in the labor force, they are more likely to be self-employed, and they are more likely to be active in the productive sector of the economy, rather than being concentrated in clerical work which is the case for women in capitalist countries. Although data were not abundant, similar results were found in the remaining areas of education, legal, political and social status of women." @default.
