- W590936315 abstract "This thesis looks at the place of psychological theory in the training ofeducational psychologists, and at the relationship between theory andpractice during the training period. Training of educationalpsychologists in England and Wales consists of a first degree inpsychology, followed by teacher qualification and experience, which isfollowed by a one year Master's degree. Professional psychologists arerecognised in the UK through Chartered Psychologist Status of theBritish Psychological Society, which generally assumes a scientistpractitioner model of training and practice. The literature reviewexplores the nature of educational psychology and the question of howfar educational psychologists are applied psychologists. It alsoexplores the nature of professional training, including reference toother professions, and some aspects of the theory-practicerelationship in professional training. Empirical work consisted offocus group interviews carried out at the end of their Master's yearwith trainee groups from a sample of the universities, and individualsemi-structured interviews of tutors from the same courses.Documentation concerning the courses and training in educationalpsychology was reviewed and analysed to provide additionalinformation. The data are presented thematically and used toilluminate issues which emerge from the literature. The literatureanalysis and the data suggest that there are difficulties over the roleof psychological theory In the training of educational psychologists,and that there are aspects of their role which make It difficult foreducational psychologists to function as applied psychologists. Thesedifficulties may In part be due to the nature and length of thetraining, and in part due to factors within the profession itselfincluding its position within the LEA." @default.
