- W590943890 abstract "Many concrete structures are located in aggressive environments with exposure to seawater of saline ground water, and are at risk of chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement. Ingress of chloride ions, derived from these sources, to the depth of steel in concrete is the major cause of the corrosion. In the work conducted during this project, a large number of parameters such as two levels of concrete quality (cement content and water/cement ratio), three levels of thickness of concrete cover over the reinforcement, three different diameters of reinforcing bars and three levels of chloride contamination, were incorporated in the experimental study in order to generate data towards a predictive model. This work has enabled development of a model to predict the depth of corrosion that would cause cracking on the cover concrete, and time to the first crack formation, thereby providing an improved prediction of service life. The last stage of the prediction would require further work to determine the time when the steel section loss would become large enough (e.g. 20 per cent) to affect the integrity of the structure. The last stage was not covered in the project due to much longer time required to collect such data. Based on the available data, recommendations have been made regarding the prediction of time to first cracking of reinforced concrete structures subjected to chloride induced corrosion." @default.
