- W59101281 abstract "The authors examine impact of 27 years of Cuba's socialist government and society on ques- tion; more expressly, historical, economic and political fac- tors which come into play as that society grapples with its de- clared commitment to realizing full potential of women. The article makes use of reflections of five Cuban women on their own lives, as conscious participants in process of Cuban revolution, offering a window into lives of many like themselves: a 14-year-old high school student; a teacher; a women's association organizer; a performing artist; and a leading trade unionist. The authors' dialogue with these women, complemented by their ongoing research, generates at least two conclusions on woman question in Cuba, on what has been termed the rev- olution within revolution. First, that Cuban socialist pro- cess has set up possibility for gender equality, but that pos- sibility can only be realized through continuous application of government policies from above, and expansion of con- sciousness from below among both women and men. Second, that interaction between government-level policies and grassroots consciousness-raising occurs in economic, politi- cal and social spheres, and is actualized in terms of women's work, relationships and power." @default.
