- W59157127 abstract "GW bodies (GWBs, or processing bodies) are cytoplasmic foci that were first identified through the use of an autoimmune serum that targeted the marker protein, GW182. GWBs were initially considered to function as both storage loci for a specific subset of messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) and degradation sites for mRNAs. Studies showing that disruption of GWBs impaired mRNA silencing activity have linked these cytoplasmic structures to the small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) and micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) pathways. GW182 is the key factor mediating miRNA-Ago2 complex-initiated translational repression and mRNA degradation. Clinical diagnoses associated with antibodies to GWBs include Sjögren syndrome (SjS), ataxia, mixed motor and sensory neuropathy, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and other conditions. Several autoantigens that are highly enriched in GWBs include the Ago/Su and proteins participating in mRNA degradation, such as Ge-1 and RAP55. The clinical relevance of anti-Ago2/Su is unclear as these autoantibodies have been found in SLE and many other conditions including apparently healthy individuals. Anti-Ge-1 is commonly associated with primary biliary cirrhosis." @default.
