- W591645411 abstract "The fuel consumption in the world is increasing by the day while the oil reserves are decreasing. A result of this is the constant oil price increase that forces the transport manufacturers to come up with new economically profitable solutions. Beyond the economical challenge there are also new improved emission legislations and the tolerance for NOx emissions are drastically reduced. Leading transport manufacturers have early been out with cars operating on alternative fuels, but Volvo is one of the first to introduce the hybrid technique for heavy vehicles. The hybrid solution, chosen by Volvo is a parallel hybrid and has an electric motor and a diesel engine; it operates either with these two together or by themselves. The hybrid is presented as a promising concept, its quiet, has reduced fuel consumption approximately 20% and highly reduced exhaust emissions.The most profitable scope of use for the hybrid is in city driving, i.e. where a lot of start and stops occur, for example city busses and refuse vehicles. Before the hybrid is ready for serial production, the hybrid components need to be tested and verified in a real environment. Today, the hybrid has been commercially released and by the end of the year field tests are going to be performed, in order to verify the hybrid components in regard to among others climate and altitude. In order to verify the components and vehicles these are exposed to extreme conditions to see that they fulfil requirements set by Volvo, the manufactures and suppliers. Since the hybrid is a new concept the purpose of this project was to come up with a method to test and verify hybrid components in vehicle. The aim of this project was to find out which components should be tested and also come up with a way how they should be tested with the help of design requirements. With the help of the design requirements, tests performed by Volvo engineers and component designers’ and supervisor sign pointing the aim was achieved and resulted in a test method for verification of hybrid components with a regard to climate and altitude." @default.
