- W591681273 abstract "The author reviews a series of automation experiments and projects which have been conducted on various underground lines in West Germany. Track signal conductors were followed by automatic driving and braking systems and in the 70's by magnetically levitated cabins in several cities, including Wetter, Erlangen, Dortmund and Berlin. A brief description is given of Dortmund's H-bahn system which links two university campuses using a driverless system and which it is planned to link in with the local public transport system. The operation of the M-bahn in Berlin is then described, in particular the safety aspects of driverless trains, the use of platform doors and emergency escape routes. The author notes the importance that has emerged of emergency strategies and licensing procedures in the transition to driverless trains. The feasibility of centralised train dispatching with driverless operation and unstaffed trains as evidenced by Berlin's SELTRAC and Hamburg's PUSH is briefly discussed. The author concludes that further development of driverless operation depends on a joint research programme for bringing the system into service in metropolitan railways, rapid transit railways and light rail. In this context the MASON project (modular automatic system with safety features for local public transport) is described. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 827940." @default.
