- W591965356 abstract "The purpose of this research is to increase knowledge and understanding of the consequences and effects of urban renewal. By examining the re-location experience of families required to move because of residences were demolished, we can gain a clearer understanding of both physical and economic effects (rehousing), and social and psychological consequences. The basic premise upon which the research rests in that relocation can cause a major disruption in the lives of those affected. Although relocation is a public responsibility in Canada, we know little about the aforementioned effects, wither in theory or in practice. The research design used allows for comparability of data with the Boston West End RelocationStudy, directed by Dr. Marc Fried. The major research question with respect to rehousing is the degree to which those dislocated by urban renewal are able to relocate in decent safe and sanitary housing, in satisfactory neighbourhoods and at rents they can afford. This allows for an assessment of the public responsibility for rehousing as defined in Canada. In measuring social and psychological consequences, Fried developed a framework based on factors of mobility in port of entry and working class communities. For the rural immigrant, the working class community offers stability through a locally-based network of social relationships. Mobility from this community depends upon readiness to give up these relationships. In ordinary circumstances this is accomplished at a time of social and psychological readiness for change. Under urban renewal, however, enforced dislocation may not coincide with readiness for change. Fried’s major hypothesis is that most people in working class communities are not ready for the challenge of enforced change caused by urban renewal, and therefore will have problems kin adjusting to the relocation experience. The principal source of data is structured interviews with 78 families having children at school, who lived in the first section of Alexandra Park to be renewed. (An extension of the Boston interview schedule includes material on the adjustment of children to relocation). By chance the sample divided itself into 3 groups of equal size, a Portuguese group, an “Other Ethnic” group and a Canadian-born group. In the analysis of data both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. Extensive use was made of case material from the open-ended questions on the interview schedule, illustrating responses to the overall experience of relocation and to specific aspects of this experience." @default.
