- W59203911 abstract "This chapter provides the basis for the development of experimental systems to study the effect of gender and aging in trauma models. Trauma is the leading cause of death. A number of risk factors for traumatic injury have been identified (lifestyle, alcoholism/drug abuse, economic background, employment, etc.). Several epidemiologic studies also suggest the importance of age and gender as additional risk factors in traumatic injury. As new agents become available and as new insights into the role of these factors are elucidated, trauma models will need to be modified accordingly. This area of experimental study is in its infancy. Application of these methods is far ranging and includes subsequent study of immunologic, physiologic, biochemical, and metabolic parameters. Limitations are only in the ability of the investigator to design experimental models/ systems that are relevant and that accurately mimic the clinical setting." @default.
