- W59264314 abstract "Several thousand papers were published on the practical application of the electrooptical effects in liquid crystals. The authors do not regard themselves as experts on this topic although they are familiar with the basic material involved. The aim of this chapter is not to give firm recommendations on the construction of devices, but to analyze critically the possible applications of these and other effects based on the underlying physical mechanisms which were discussed in the preceding chapters. As regards firm recommendations, these can be found in the literature referred to in this chapter. Liquid crystals already occupy a permanent place as electrooptical materials for the display of information in self-contained devices (i. e. , with isolated power packs), such as digital watches and clocks, pocket calculators, measurement instruments such as digital voltmeters, etc. In devices which are not self-contained their application may also be advised when there is a large volume of information to be displayed or where the indicator panels are of large dimensions. There is also every reason to expect that the technical difficulties standing in the way of producing color flat television screens made of liquid crystals will, with time, be overcome, and it will be possible to produce cheap screens which meet the requirements of television (TV) with regard to both resolution and high-speed response." @default.
