- W593338462 abstract "Addressing continual passenger growth and customer demands has led to the popularization of Communication Based Train Control (CBTC). The technology has brought about a dramatic change in the way urban rail systems protect and control their trains, resulting in safer operation. The change has been so significant that the word ‘signalling’ really doesn’t apply anymore. The past ten years have seen the adoption of Communication Based Train Control by many metros around the world for both re-signalling and greenfield applications. This includes the traditional large operators such as RATP in Paris, London Underground, and New York City Transit, as well as many of the newer metro operators of the world: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Dubai. This paper will first examine the reasons behind the popularity of CBTC and then look at recent trends and technological evolution. This will include the use of driverless operation, the enhanced safety that the new technology provides, and developments in the areas of energy saving and wireless communication. A discussion of why train control is a more appropriate term than ‘signalling’ will be provided. In addition, a study will be made of the new train control technology’s ability to be integrated with security and information systems which enhance the passenger experience. By extrapolating the trends of the past ten years, the author presents a prediction of how train control will have evolved by 2025" @default.
