- W59365658 abstract "The idea that human memory depends on a set of stores of varying capacities and retention characteristics is an appealing one, yet there are problems with this account. Craik and Lockhart (1972) proposed an alternative framework for memory research couched in terms of processes or mental activities rather than in terms of structures. The central notion is that the human information-processing system is organized hierarchically, from early (shallow) sensory analyses to later (deep) analyses in terms of meaning. Craik and Lockhart suggested that memory performance is related to the type of analyses carried out, with deeper processing associated with higher levels of performance and longer lasting memory traces. Maintenance and elaborative rehearsal are two types of further processing; ‘maintenance’ holds information at the same level of processing whereas ‘elaborative’ connotes deeper and more meaningful processing. Only the latter type is associated with enhanced recall levels. The notion of a short-term or primary memory is retained, but as continuing activity rather than as a separate store. These ideas were illustrated in a series of experiments reported by Craik and Tulving (1975). The article ends with a review of criticisms and rebuttals of the levels of processing perspective." @default.
