- W594542393 abstract "Choosing effective stormwater best management practices (BMPs) can be challenging. The science of stormwater management can answer some questions about BMP performance, but there are still many unknowns and many considerations that need to be balanced. This article discusses the challenge of choosing BMPs and some of the tools that are available to help in this process. BMPs, unlike other treatment technologies, are not static systems that deliver constant or predictable results. The performance of stormwater BMPs is significantly influenced by such factors as design, installation, rainfall patterns and characteristics, soil types, slopes, land use in the drainage area, and age of the system. Rather than relying on the percent removal concept to describe BMP performance, several factors should be considered, including event mean concentrations, volume reduction information, and total load reduction. One of the better ways to compare the performance of BMPs across types is to compare total load reduction. Increases in impervious surfaces on watersheds result in increases in stormwater flowing off the land. When planning and designing systems to manage urban stormwater, planners need to weigh options that encourage infiltration of stormwater and help to maintain or restore the natural hydrologic balance of the land that is being developed. The condition and characteristics of the watershed in which they will be placed should also be an important consideration. Before beginning the stormwater BMP selection and planning process, information should be gathered about the watershed and water quality standards and designated uses, historical monitoring data, existing impairments and water quality problems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently released the Urban Stormwater BMP Performance Tool that presents BMP performance data from more than 220 scientific studies. This tool can be used to help find the best BMP for controlling a specific pollutant, and to determine how a specific BMP performs across a range of pollutants and parameters." @default.
