EACH RECORD CONTAINED ALL THE INFORMATION NECESSARY TO IDENTIFY THE BRIDGE AND DATA FROM THE OFFICE FILES, SUCH AS MATERIAL TESTS AND TIME OF YEAR WHEN EACH PORTION OF THE STRUCTURE WAS BUILT. INFORMATION WAS CODED AND RECORDED ON IBM PUNCH CARDS. CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS WERE COMPUTED SHOWING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF THE CONRETE AND OTHER FACTORS OR VARIABLES. SO MANY VARIABLES AFFECTED THE CONDITION OF THE CONCRETE THAT ONLY A FEW OF THE COEFFICIENTS WERE SIGNIFICANT. THIS STUDY OF CORRELATIONS SHOWED THAT FINE AGGREGATES WHICH WERE LARGELY GRANITIC IN TEXTURE PRODUCED THE MOST DURABLE CONCRETE. IT ALSO SHOWED THAT FINE AGGREGATES HIGH IN ABSORPTION, SUCH AS SHALES, WOULD NOT PRODUCE DURABLE CONCRETE. THE TYPE OF DETERIORATION DUE TO ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION BETWEEN CERTAIN COMBINATIONS OF CEMENTS AND AGGREGATES WAS NOT FOUND ON ANY OF THE MAINE BRIDGES AND IN THE LABORATORY THE TEST FOR PORENTIAL REACTIVITY OF CEMENT-AGGREGATE COMBINATIONS MOST COMMONLY USED DID NOT PRODUCE AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF EXPANSION IN ANY CASE. IN THE LABORATORY A NUMBER OF TESTS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED ON AGGREGATES AND CONCRETE, SUCH AS MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF SANDS, SOUNDNESS OF AGGREGATES USING MAGNESIUM SULFATE AND SODIUM SULFATE, FREEZING AND THAWING TESTS ON FINE AND COARSE AGGREGATES IN WATER, AND FREEZING AND THAWING TESTS ON 3- BY 4- BY 16-IN.
