- W595304841 abstract "This chapter, from the proceedings of an international conference on the terrain and geohazard challenges facing onshore oil and gas pipelines (June 2004, London, United Kingdom), presents a case study of oil and gas pipelines through the Makarov Mountains, Sakhalin Island, in Russia. The authors describe the processes of geological and geomorphological modeling that were used to assist in the selection and confirmation of route corridors for this project, part of the development of oil and gas fields located off the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island. Observed and suspected ground movements occur in the region; the oil and gas pipelines will each cover a distance of over 800 km, including some 126 km through swamplands, and 110 km across mountains, hilly, or sloping terrain. The focus of the study was on the identification and assessment of critical areas and the development of geological and geomorphological interpretation as a basis for finalizing the alignment through the Makarov Mountains. The study had to rely entirely on remote sensing and field observation, due to the presence of possible unexploded ordinance in the area which precluded the use of intrusive ground investigation. The study concluded that the proposed alignment was feasible, but other alignments within the corridor were determined to be preferable, notably those that make greater use of ridge lines." @default.
