• W59550103 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV-I) and disease. Retroviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that replicate via a DNA intermediate, which is synthesized by a virally encoded enzyme, reverse transcriptase. The viral DNA is inserted into a chromosome of the host cell, from where it directs the synthesis of new viral proteins and viral RNA. Being physically incorporated into a chromosome, the viral DNA is replicated alongside the host cell DNA at cell division. HTLV-I was first linked to a chronic neurological disease while screening blood donors during a study of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and HTLV-I in Martinique in the West Indies. They found that 10 out of 17 cases of tropical spastic paraparesis had antibodies to HTLV-I as tested by both enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assays and Western blot methods. Since then, more than 75% of tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) cases worldwide have antibodies to HTLV-I from Jamaica, Colombia, Trinidad, the Seychelles Islands, Japan, and British resident Caribbean-born patients. In Japan, the association between HTLV-I and TSP is recognized in the disease name, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. In a large series, of over 300 definitive cases, the great majority were positive for HTLV-I antibodies. TSP was first described in Jamaica where it is the commonest neurological problem after stroke." @default.
