- W595738832 abstract "The history of commerce and travel among the great rivers of the United States is presented. Much development began with the French, who used rivers to further their exploration of North America, establishing outposts which became towns and commercial center. Cities such as Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans had their origins as inland ports and riverfront trading posts. Rivers became more important transportation systems with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. River vessels powered by steam were introduced at this time. Issues examined by the author include the Civil War, commerce in cotton and slaves, Reconstruction, engineering, and developments in the twentieth century. The website http://www.experiencemississippiriver.com offers more information on the Mississippi River." @default.
