- W59600273 abstract "More than 52 million adults currently provide care to relatives in the United States (Family Caregiver Alliance, Selected Caregiver Statistics, 2005; Schulz and Beach, JAMA 282:2215–2219, 1999). These family caregivers become active members of the health care team with little or no preparation in disease management, sometimes under sudden and extreme circumstances. As this has occurred, the demanding role of caring for patients has fallen to untrained, inexperienced family members. Involvement of family caregivers is essential for the optimal treatment of the cancer-pain patient, especially in assuring treatment compliance, continuity of care, and social support (Warner, Hosp J 8(1–2):155–170, 1992). In response, the medical community has sought to develop education, support, and training programs to guide family members caring for patients with cancer." @default.
