- W596036956 abstract "In Chaps. 1 and 2, we have mainly considered an exciton or an excitonic molecule (EM) as an elementary electronic excitation in the static and spatially periodic field of a rigid crystal, but the real crystal lattice is deformable and vibrating. The lattice vibrations cause a spatially and temporally fluctuating potential for the exciton. The spatial fluctuation gives rise to scattering and momentary localization of the exciton, as reflected in the broadening and the low-energy tail, respectively, of the excitonic absorption spectra. The temporal fluctuation is responsible for the fine structure (phonon sidebands) in the spectra. The deformability of the lattice causes the reverse action: the exciton induces a lattice distortion around itself, namely, the exciton is always dressed with phonons. This has the effect of stabilizing — in some cases, even immobilizing — the exciton, as reflected in the energy shift of excitonic absorption and luminescence spectra. Not only the translational, but also the relative motion of the electron and the hole in the exciton is subject to the effect of self-induced phonons; in particular, optical phonons give rise to dynamical screening of the electron-hole (e-h) Coulomb attraction, thus reducing the effective binding energy significantly." @default.
