- W596147920 abstract "The article examines the health, safety, and legal implications of reversing vehicles in the UK. In lorry driving, reversing is not only difficult but can also be very dangerous, especially in distribution yards, because large lorries have many blind spots. On public roads, drivers and operators, involved in accidents with reversing vehicles, will be prosecuted by the police, probably for careless driving, whose maximum penalty is a #2500 fine and nine penalty points. In reversing accidents in a workplace off the road, prosecution is possible under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Workplace (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. A person or company also has the right to claim compensation under civil liability for death, injury, or damage arising as a result of an accident on or off the road. Risk assessment of reversing vehicles should allow for: (1) which people or objects are likely to be harmed or damaged by the vehicle; (2) in which ways people are affected; (3) the extent and adequacy of existing control measures like reversing alarms and mirrors; (4) ways of eliminating the risks; and (5) measures to handle identified risks. Road traffic law does not require the fitment or use of reversing alarms on lorries, but the Department of Transport (DOT) is now seeking views on such fitment." @default.
