- W596227528 abstract "This paper aims to review developments in systems affecting traffic in motorway road tunnels; it emphasises the specific improvements and operating experience of these developments in several tunnel systems, and it outlines possible future developments and areas where further improvements could be made. The most widely used methods of surveillance of traffic in motorway tunnels are closed circuit television and inductive loop systems. Efficient communications between motorists and motorway police or tunnel control staff are essential in emergencies, and can be made through telephones, public address systems, or mobile radio. The most important factors to be monitored and controlled, to ensure the safe and unhindered flow of traffic through motorway tunnels, are carbon monoxide level, visibility, and luminance. The monitoring of tunnel plant and equipment, through appropriate levels of alarm, is also very important. Motorway tunnels need not only the normal facilities for traffic control, but also the following additional facilities: (1) height detectors; (2) stopping the entry of traffic for operational, maintenance, or emergency reasons; (3) advising about congestion, delay, diversions, etc; and (4) facilities for handling special two-way working. Police control offices are needed, each responsible for motorway tunnels within their area. It is imperative that all systems for road tunnels have maximum reliability. The principal design features aiding long-term operation and maintenance of tunnel systems are good documentation and flexible software. (TRRL)" @default.
