- W59703954 abstract "The chapter discusses the factors influencing the cyclic rotation capacity of steel moment-resisting (MR) joints. Based on extended experimental studies on different types of MR steel connections, the main factors responsible for the deformability of MR connections are examined in the chapter. The chapter emphasizes that in order to control the rotation capacity, it is necessary to first put out fragile components by overstrength and adequate detailing, and then select by a design no more than two basic components as the main sources of plastic deformation. The idea of using only two macro components to build an analytical procedure to design joints for a requested rotation capacity is sustained. Modern design codes and recommendations for ductile moment-resisting steel frames in seismic zones require beam-to-column joints to sustain a total rotation of 0.035 radians (in Europe) to 0.04 radians (in United States). However, the problem of these codes is that there are no analytical methods to predict the rotation capacity of MR connections for monotonic loading, which is simpler when compared with seismic action cyclic type." @default.
