- W597472012 abstract "The present thesis examines some aspects of the structureof urban space found in particular towns in theSahara, and the peculiarities in their dual organisationof the circulation systems: the streets and theroof terraces of the houses inter-connected by anothersystem of walkways, which are exclusively reserved forthe circulation of women across the settlements orparts of the settlements. The terrace morphology isdeveloped in different forms and at various degrees ofelaboration in these urban systems, which are usuallyseen as the result of some external determinant factor, such as religion, with the public being wholly male andwomen confined to the domestic sphere. Since there areno differences in religious terms between these systems, this view cannot be adopted to account for thepronounced differences in their spatial configurations. The study argues that: i- the terrace morphology isonly one instance of the spatial mechanisms which enterin the separation and integration of the sexes, theglobal organisation of the street system is another;ii- these mechanisms, to include the terrace system, are intimately bound up with the nature of the urbanfabric of these towns, which can be characterized aspoorly connected and highly segregated, with a distinctiveorganisation of the main streets with regard tothe settlement as a whole. The dense fabric of thesetowns with large urban blocks creates both, the highlevel of segregation of the street system and largerroof surfaces; iii- both, the nature of the urbanfabric and the global organisation of these systems arestrongly related to the generative processes of urbanformation, and the underlying rules followed in theaggregation of buildings on the ground. These rules areseen as expressions to social restrictions on relationsbetween and within male and female groups. The computersimulations of the urban growth show that the highlysegregated nature of the spatial fabric and its distinctiveglobal organisation are the by-product of amore localized process of building aggregation. Thestudy concludes that the dualistic structure of thesetowns and its variation lies in the greater emphasis onmale-female relations and the greater localization inthe structuring of space. It demonstrates then thatthe relation between the terrace morphology and theurban form of these towns is shown to exist at thedeepest level of space organisation, at the level ofthe generative rules of settlement formation. By this, the study uses an architectural approach to broach thequestion of relationship between the social and spatialaspects of these towns." @default.
