- W597969501 abstract "The development of experimental techniques for evaluating the dynamic response of motor vehicles by relying to a great extent upon laboratory tests has accelerated in recent years. Fatigue tests in the laboratory instead of on the road offer many advantages, including a substantial reduction of testing time, a high degree of repeatability and the opportunity for an extensive instrumentation of the structure during the test, thus enabling data to be acquired which will be useful for subsequent specific tests on components or sub-assemblies. The most difficult problem has always been how to simulate with acceptable accuracy the dynamic forces applied to the wheels under various conditions of rough surface, cornering, acceleration and braking. Fiat's newly-acquired road simulator, the use of which is described together with examples of results obtained and a specimen correlation between road and laboratory tests for three cars, enables the simulation problem to be tackled in a new way. Electro-hydraulic actuators, controlled by a remote parameter control system, enable braking torque and the three loads acting on the fundamental axis to be reproduced, after computer analysis of recorded road loads.
