- W59803699 abstract "On a hot August day in 1918, as yet unpublished F. Scott Fitzgerald stood on Capitol Hill in Washington, trying to impress two young women from Montgomery, Alabama, with his promise as a writer. To that end, he told them that he was about to send a story to Smart Set and that and Dreiser were greatest living writers in America. The girls (one of whom, Sara Haardt, would marry Mencken twelve years later) were more startled by romantic gesture in infantry lieutenant's boots and spurs than by his literary savvy. What he had to say was hardly news in 1918. By then Mencken, along with George Jean Nathan, had made Smart Set a goal for aspiring writers. In its pages, for nearly a decade, Mencken had labored to establish Dreiser as norm against which fiction in America was to be judged. One function of literary criticism is to create cultural fable, and Dreiser, who had a gift for self-dramatization, proved a good match for his frienďs mythmaking. When Sherwood Anderson spoke of the wilderness of Puritan denial as the road that Dreiser faced alone, he spoke, like many of his contemporaries, in vivid hyperbole that Mencken had invented." @default.
