- W598052247 abstract "The 5-year, $150 million Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) is targeted at four specific areas: asphalt, concrete and structures, long-term pavement performance, and highway operations. Research into asphalt binder specifications will link it to pavement performance. Performance-related attributes will be identified and quantified, including the asphalt-aggregate bond interface. A practical result will be accelerated tests to predict the field performance of asphalt. Innovative methodologies will be developed for modifying asphalt to compensate for deficiencies that adversely affect pavement performance. SHRP's program on concrete and structures will include research on increasing portland cement concrete durability in highway applications, and rehabilitating and protecting corroded steel-reinforced concrete bridges. Research will also focus on freeze-thaw cracking and deterioratiion from chemically reactive aggregates, materials characterization tests, techniques for rehabilitating existing bridge components, and developing diagnostic techniques. The long-term pavement performance research will monitor more than 1,000 pavements and develop equations for predicting road performance and hence designing longer lasting roads. The article also briefly describes the highway operations research which will include two subprograms: maintenance cost effectiveness, and snow and ice control." @default.
