- W59865634 abstract "Morphological studies of fixed brain sections have yielded many clues concerning astrocyte development in vivo in higher mammals. However, purely descriptive studies provide at most circumstantial evidence about lineage relationships. For example, it is still not known precisely when during development neuroectodermal cells become committed to neuronal or glial cell lineages. Recently recombinant retroviral tracers have been used to address this issue in the rat and chick embryo (Turner and Cepko, 1987; Galileo et al., 1990). Another approach more applicable especially to human studies is to address these issues in dissociated cell culture. As in other species, glial cells of various central nervous system (CNS) regions from humans and other higher mammals can be established in primary cultures and their development monitored in vitro. The utility of the in vitro approach was greatly advanced in the 1980s with the development of a variety of cell type specific antibodies (Raff et al., 1979), which were demonstrated to be useful for identifying not only fully differentiated cells but also early progenitors and cells in intermediate stages of development." @default.
