- W599409385 abstract "The trip matrix is a table containing traffic demands from each origin to each destination in a road network. It is an essential source of information in every aspect of the transport planning process. It can be estimated from traffic counts on road links by a Matrix Estimation (ME) method. Normally, a trip matrix is sought that produces link flows which are as close as possible to the observed link flows. On the other hand, given a trip matrix, link flows can be determined by a Traffic Assignment (TA) model. In the combined ME and TA problem, a solution pair, trip matrix and link flows may be sought, which are mutually consistent. Alternatively, we may also seek a bi-level solution with the ME problem having priority over TA problem. For a TA problem, a Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE) assignment model is most desirable because it accounts for both congestion effects and drivers' differences in route choice. In this paper, solution methods for the combined ME and SUE assignment problem are presented. The methods are iterative in nature. At each iteration, a search direction is found by the standard routines of ME and the new method for SUE assignment problem (Maher, 1998). Then an optimal step length is found by a line search. Finally, the current solution is updated to get a new solution for the next iteration. The algorithms have so far been tested on small networks with encouraging results.
