- W599493941 abstract "The thermo-physical properties of conventional and modified asphalt and concrete pavements have been studied in order to understand their contribution to the Urban Heat Island. The emissivity, the albedo, and the solar reflective index was measured on three types of concrete (plain, rubber modified and surface-painted) and on four types of asphalt (dense bitumen macadam, polymer modified dense bitumen macadam, enrobe a module eleve and painted dense bitumen macadam ). An infrared camera, a pyranometer, a weather station and a set of thermocouples were used for data collection from an outdoor experimental set-up, as well as in a controlled laboratory environment. It was found that asphalt material releases superficial heat quicker than concrete, despite a higher aptitude to emit heat. The release of internal temperatures are slow in concrete during the day. The yellow painted paved surfaces generate a positive, although a different, reflective and cooling effects on both asphalt and concrete material. The painted asphalt surfaces are also less prone to heat up and remained colder during the day, although the degradation of paint by weathering has adverse effect on cooling effect. On the other hand, rubber modified concrete appears to have better resistance to weathering for lowering the surface temperature. The more widespread use of painted surfaces could be considered a helpful approach to the design of urban paving and its management to combat the Urban Heat Island phenomenon." @default.
