- W60124871 abstract "Map relationships suggest that subregional shear zones integral to metamorphic core complexes in southeastern Arizona taper upward and connect into faults and fault zones. When the ductile-brittle shear zones formed initially they probably dipped at angles averaging 45 degrees or more, and not at their presently observed inclinations of 30 degrees or less. The ductile-brittle shear zones now lie on their sides having been passively rotated to gentle inclinations through crustal extension that continued beyond their inception. The zones accommodated shearing and slip while being rotated to progressively shallower angles of dip. Even though useful in conveying first principles, computer card models and geometric constructions based on images of tabular shear zones with parallel walls do not lend themselves to exploring the details of shearing within tapering zones. However, the structure of an upward-tapering shear zone can be usefully modeled through a series of aligned rectangular elements of systematically varying thicknesses. When new undistorted elements are superposed on the linked distorted elements, it becomes apparent that the new elements effectively insert themselves into the interior of the original zone. Some parts of the earlier strained elements become excluded from the zone of active shear, and as a consequence are translatedmore » passively along with original hanging wall and footwall. Steady progressive simple-shear within a zone of ever-decreasing thickness generates a macroscopic sigmoidal pattern of strain trajectories which conveys sense of shear and variation in strain.« less" @default.
