- W60186936 abstract "The zoobenthos (the community of animals living around sediments and aquatic plants) is the major source of food to most lake-dwelling fish, and can control the amount and kind of phytoplankton, zooplankton, attached algae, and aquatic plants in lakes. The activities of benthic animals modulate exchanges of nutrients and toxins between sediments and overlying water. Some benthic animals are harvested for human use, while others carry important parasites of humans and wildlife, including schistosomes, other flukes, and acanthocephalans. Most lakes contain hundreds of species of benthic animals representing 12–15 phyla and a wide range of biological traits. The most important groups in the lacustrine (i.e., lake-dwelling) zoobenthos typically are tubificid oligochaetes, chironomid and chaoborid dipterans, nematodes, microcrustaceans, rotifers, and bivalves, although other groups are important in individual lakes. The density and composition of the zoobenthos vary enormously, both within lakes and across lakes. The major factors that influence the structure of the zoobenthos include the quantity and quality of organic matter inputs (e.g., primary production), biotic interactions such as fish predation and macrophyte cover, lake morphometry, water chemistry (including dissolved oxygen), temperature, sediment grain size, and disturbance." @default.
