- W602000767 abstract "This paper, presented in March 1985, is in two parts: Part 1: The Submersible Shinkai 2000,: by Dr. M. Endo. The first Japanese deep-submergence research system, whose development started in 1977, consists essentially of the manned deep-submergence research vehicle Shinkai 2000, the support ship Natsushima (the subject of Part 2), and a shore base. Mitsubishi HI designed and constructed Shinkai 2000, which was delivered to Japan Marine Science & Technology Centre (JAMSTEC) in 1981 following sea trials to the vehicle's maximum operating depth of 2000 m, and she is now playing an important role in Japanese ocean research. The Author, of MHI, describes and discusses in some detail the submersible's design and construction and gives a brief account of her testing and initial operations. General-arrangement drawings are given, and principal particulars listed include: length 9.3 m; breadth 3 m; height 2.9 m; draught 2.5 m; weight 23.2 t; pressure sphere 2.2 m i/d, of NS90 steel; complement 3 persons; payload (excluding crew and manipulator) 100 kg; life support duration 240 man-hr. There is a steerable thruster at the stern and, on each side, a vertically tilting thruster; the three can be operated together to give a maximum speed of 3 knots; power is from an inverter-controlled AC motor system fed by the two 285-Ah 108-V main batteries. It is mentioned that experience with Shinkai 2000 is expected to make a large contribution to the development of a 6000-m class deep-submergence vehicle that Japan is now planning. Part 2: The Support Ship Natsushima, by T. Ikeda. Natsushima, the support ship for Shinkai 2000, was commissioned in 1981. She was designed and built by Kawasaki HI, and is intended to serve as a conventional research vessel as well as a support ship for the submersible. She has a laboratory and a variety of research facilities, and can support the submersible's maintenance and service needs for about ten underwater sessions. For launching and recovering Shinkai 2000, she has an A-frame gantry at the stern, and a hangar on the upper deck provides a maintenance area for the submersible and her transportation trolley. The Author, of KHI, describes the ship and, in particular, her special equipment. Sea trials have confirmed that the launching/retrieval system works well in seas up to Sea State 4, and that underwater noise-radiation conditions and the underwater navigation/communication system were highly satisfactory. Natsushima's principal particulars are: length 60 m b.p.; moulded breadth 13 m; moulded depth 6.3 m; draught 3.75 m; 1530 grt (approx.); two main Diesel engines, mcr 2 x 850 hp at 950 rpm, nsr 2 x 720 hp at 900 rpm, driving twin c.p. propellers (three modes: 220/107/84 rpm); two 500-kVA main Diesel/generator sets; bow thruster (c.p. propeller) 220/110-kW x 920/360-rpm; cruising speed/range 12 knots/10,280 nmiles (approx.)" @default.
