- W602999820 abstract "The use of piston theory was recently advocated for supersonic aeroelastic analyses, including the problem of panel flutter, and this has stimulated the investigation reported here. Linear piston theory is mainly considered, but some effects of introducing higher order terms are discussed. Flutter of rectangular simply supported panels and of elliptically shaped clamped-edge panels is considered, and some justification is provided for the use of static aerodynamic forces and the neglect of aerodynamic damping. Hence, it is concluded tha t Ackeret loading gives more exact results than piston theory. Solution of the flutter equations is made by applying Galerkin's method to a Rayleigh-type analysis using assumed modes of deformation. a. = initial incidence of rigid panel 0 = VM 1 0, 8 = functions of M, k defined after Eq. (13) li = panel-air mass ratio v — Poisson's ratio P = density of undisturbed supersonic stream a = density of panel material co = frequency of oscillation ton = frequency associated with mode shape Zn ti = frequency ratio squared (coi/co); in flutter calculations (coi/to) (1 + ig) y = specific-heat ratio of air 7T = ratio of length of circumference of circle to its diameter" @default.
