- W603117491 abstract "Porous pavements are considered to be among the most effective countermeasures for reducing traffic noise. The result of this study indicates the noise reduction effect of porous pavement is about 3-4dB compared with a dense asphalt pavement. This noise reduction effect is not sufficient for roadside conditions in Japan since many residences face on to the national highway with extremely heavy traffic. Moreover, the acoustic performance of porous pavements decreases over the life of the pavement because of clogging and the change in surface texture. In order to solve these problems, development of a new type of pavement, which possesses better acoustic performance, is necessary. Double-layer porous pavement can extend the period of acoustic performance and improves the initial noise reduction effect. It consists of two different aggregate sizes. The smaller aggregate is used for the upper layer and the bigger aggregate is used for the lower layer. Since the void channel in the upper layer is relatively narrow, clogging is inevitable. But, once clogging occurs, dirt tends to stay in the upper layer. As long as dirt stays in the upper layer, cleaning is easy. In addition, the smaller aggregate size makes the initial noise reduction higher. On the other hand, the bigger aggregate in the lower layer helps to protect this pavement from rutting produced by traffic loading. The double-layer porous pavement was constructed on one of the national roads in Nagoya city. Measurements of tire/road noise, peak level of pass-by and sound propagation were carried out after the construction. This paper reports the result of this investigation.
