- W604310779 abstract "This article reports how the residents of houses on a busy section of the Glastonbury bypass, Somerset, England, have experienced dramatically less noise from passing vehicles. Although the road is only about 50m from the houses' gardens, a new 160m long environmental barrier and acoustic screen has reduced noise levels by at least 50%, and greatly reduced the passage of exhaust emission and dust from the 10,000 vehicles that pass each day. The barrier is constructed from a living woven willow frame with an earth core, into which the willow roots and grows. The wall can be built to a height from 1m to 5m, and its top growth can provide 1m to 2m of extra visual screening. The barrier has a visually pleasing appearance, and looks more like a natural hedge than an artificial structure. Similar barriers have been used for many years in continental European countries like Germany and the Netherlands, and more and more local authorities in the UK have begun to choose them as a solution to noise and visual screening problems. Companies are also beginning to use them to screen their buildings and factory sites. Another advantage of the barriers is that they absorb rather than reflect sound, although they are more expensive than other barriers." @default.
