- W604393747 abstract "The power and torque trends of passenger car engines for the mid 90's - especially in the displacement range between 1.2 to 2.5 litres - of approximately 50 kW/litre respectively 91 - 97 Nm/litre require the introduction of 4 valves per cylinder on a large basis. Low end torque characteristics of first generation 4 valve engines in the market are rather poor and have to be improved for future engine generations. Worldwide emission legislation will increase in severity - especially the mid 90's limits for the US. Engineering target emission values for FTP 75-NOx levels of 0.25/0.40 gpm have to be achieved without deterioration of power, driveability and FE. Fuel economy was always considered important in Europe, but today also for the US for larger vehicles equipped with powerful engines the 1989 CAFE-standard of 27.5 mpg is a severe challenge and requires improvements of fuel economy for stoichiometric tuned engines.
