- W604458345 abstract "In order to take effective countermeasures against the large number of road accidents and deaths and injuries resulting from road accidents in the Republic of South Africa, bodies such as the National Road Safety Council and the Department of Transport, as well as the researchers of the National Institute for Transport and Road Research, require detailed information about road accidents in South Africa. During 1981 the National Accident Sampling System (NASS) was put into operation to collect this information. Investigations are at present conducted on the basis of structured data forms, and are of two kinds: on-the-spot investigations (at the scene of the accident) and post-accident investigations (i.e. follow-up studies). An advantage of the system is that it allows adaptation and variation. Data can at any time be added to the system, or omitted, to meet the requirements of researchers. Further advantages are that users will have continuous access to data that is of interest to them, and that they will be able to monitor trends in accident patterns. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 288720. (TRRL)" @default.
