- W604609575 abstract "Aker Solutions is looking for a new way to calculate the need for luminaries in a room or at an industrial plant. Currently the 3D model has to be exported from their CAD system PDMS (Plant Design Management System) to a light calculation program called OptiWin. The workflow of using these systems is both complex and time consuming given all the changes that happen during a project. The 3d-model must also be converted to a different format before its imported to OptiWin. The objective of this thesis is to explore the possibility of developing a light calculation program that works directly inside PDMS, without using any external programs. There is a lot of theory behind light calculation, and a natural step has been to focus on explaining how it works. This has been done by looking at two different methods called ray tracing and radiosity. They are methods for making photorealistic scenes, and a big part of it is to simulate the light as realistic as possible. Because of this, one or both methods are used in most light calculation software. The thesis concludes that radiosity would be the best method to use when developing a light calculation program for PDMS and radiosity is therefore a big focus. The thesis also focuses on mapping the biggest problems associated with development of this software. The biggest problems seem to be the file formats PDMS can export the 3d-models as, as well as the actual light calculation engine that would have to do the calculations. An important part of the thesis has been to find a way to deal with current problem of having to convert the 3d-model before doing the calculations. In the current solution, a license for Microstation is needed to convert a file, and this causes the workflow to be more complex as well as adding unneeded costs. The essence of the thesis is to find or develop a light calculation engine, because once an engine that works in C# and accepts the 3d-model of PDMS is found, a lot of problems are solved. The conclusion of the thesis is that development of a light calculation program for PDMS is very complex, and its not something done overnight. If it is to be implemented, it must be done properly and a lot of work must be invested. Unless there are some people specialized in light calculations in Aker Solutions, it is necessary to get help from a company who specialize in this area. Developing everything from scratch is not an option, as the result would most likely not be good enough. There are two ways to solve this problem. Either find a working commercial radiosity engine, and develop the program around it or hire a company who are specialized in light calculation to do the job. Possible solutions discussed are to either try to get a famous radiosity engine called Helios32, or contact a company like for example Lighting Analysts who has developed similar software for the CAD program Autodesk Revit, called ElumTools." @default.
