- W60484458 abstract "of the oldest and most moving themes in all literature is that which deals with emigrants. This term as used here is not limited but universal in that it applies to all people in all time who have for some reason looked beyond the horizon for a new home. Long before Moses led this people out of bondage in the first great emigrant story, men and women had dreamed of escaping from the prisons made by their rulers, or from the harsh poverty nature had imposed upon them. Primitive man with no knowledge of the world beyond the confines of his narrow valley organized a group of sturdy and rebellious friends and inspired them to follow him to a new land located across the river over the mountains to a new valley where game was plentiful, where no storms tore their shelters apart, nor wild animals killed their children at play. Someone, figuratively speaking, was found in the bulrushes by the river's brink, grew up with a vision of the promised land and led his people out of captivity. The vision and the struggle is as old as the undying fire of man's desire for bread and the right to eat it in peace. Those critics who forget or fail to grasp the long tradition of the emigrant theme will also tend either to minimize or ignore the literature of our time that follows this pattern with its age-old content of human hope and tragedy. It is common to recognize a novel as dealing with the struggles of a Polish or an Italian family as interesting in itself without realizing or even indicating that man's struggle to find a new home is as universal as is the hazardous adventure in pursuit of love. The story of Troy is no more universal than the story of the escape from captivity. Each flows from two kindred and inseparable needs of the human being; one is stifled by the absence of the other; both are necessary to the fulfillment of life." @default.
