- W605121656 abstract "This article discusses the pavement preventive maintenance programs in several states. A case study of six states with preventive maintenance (PM) programs, including Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Montana, showed that most of the PM programs started with a relatively small budget, but the success and benefits of the program led to substantial increases in the budget. For every dollar spent in the PM program, $4 to $10 are saved from the rehabilitation program. The success of the PM program appears to depend heavily on the optimum time window. The earlier the PM action is applied, the lower the cost and the higher the benefits. Distress data from pavement management systems played a crucial role in the development of cost-effective PM programs. In other pavement management research, chip seals on high volume roadways in South Dakota were found to be effective in extending the life of bituminous pavements, and their performance can be enhanced by special treatments. The performance of chip seal and microsurfacing treatments in Louisiana are also discussed." @default.
