- W605416251 abstract "The purpose of the present investigation was to identify the presence of complaints in joints and muscles and the presence of illnesses and smoking habits among different categories of professional drivers. During the month of May 1980, 460 professional drivers, all belonging to the local industrial health service in the Stockholm area of the Health and Safety Services of the Transport Trades (Transporthaelsan), participated in a postal inquiry. The results showed that the presence of complaints in joints and muscles was primarily confined to the lower back (57%), followed by shoulders (37%) and knees (32%). For most parts of the musculo-skeletal, the complaints calculated as a percentage tended to increase with advancing age. A breakdown of the drivers according to their jobs gave different profiles as regards the presence of complaints in various parts of the body, even though due account was taken to the age structures within the groups. The analyses also proved that, apart from the variables age and job, the presence of diseases of joints and Brocaindex (the relationship height - weight) played a major part as explanatory variables to the presence of orthopedic disorders. Among diseases, those affecting the otolaryngologic system were the ones most frequently occurring (28%), followed by gastrointestinal diseases (17%) and rheumatism, gout or other diseases of the joints (15%). As regards illnesses, the different categories of drivers also showed different profiles, even after due account was taken to the age structures in the groups. The analyses also proved that the so-called general risk factors, i.e. Age, brocaindex and smoking, constituted the most important factor as explanatory variables to the presence of illnesses of importance to road safety. The investigation showed that 65% of the professional drivers were smokers, although marked differences existed in the smoking habits of different categories of drivers. Finally, various statistical processing methods for this kind of investigation are discussed and views given on the practical use of the results. Proposals regarding future research are also presented. (TRRL)" @default.
