- W605587185 abstract "This article describes work on the construction of an underbridge carrying the newcastle-upon-tyne western bypass under the Tyne and Wear metro railway at fawdon. A thrust-bore underbridge was chosen, because local residents would have experienced too much traffic noise from the originally planned bridge over the line, and because it would cause minimum disruption to continued running of the railway services during construction (requiring only one continuous interruption of 30 hours). Using an underbridge would cost 1.3 m more, but this cost would be offset by environmental gains. Four 6 metre square box units, which are already in position, will hold the foundations for the new portal frame underbridge, which will have two 18 m long tunnels. Bored piled retaining walls were constructed on each side of the railway line. Because of the water-bearing sand and gravels under the site, a well-point water removal system was installed to reduce water flow into the working faces. (TRRL)" @default.
