- W605637350 abstract "In the majority of European countries only a small percentage (from 0.5% in Portugal to 8% in France) of the bitumen used in asphalt pavement construction is modified. The reason for the limited use of such products could be attributed to their higher cost. However, during the last one and a half decades the products performance based on their salient properties such as resistance to rutting, fatigue and crack propagation have largely justified this cost effect. Besides, modified binders increase the life cycle and minimise the maintenance frequency. It is possible that the limited use of such products therefore may also be ascribed to the lack of convincing performance data based on practical field experience. Therefore, it was decided to monitor the practical behaviour of a number of heavily loaded pavements for a period of at least 12 years. This study involves a number of SBS modified asphalt pavement sections at Amsterdam airport and highways in the Netherlands and Australia. The study has two principal objectives: (1) to compare the characteristics of both the asphalt and the binder during the initial years after laying with the specifications and the mix design studies (short-term objective); (2) to monitor the changes in the characteristics of both the asphalt and the binder and the overall behaviour of the pavements (long-term objective). Falling Weight Deflection measurements and visual condition surveys are being (and will be) undertaken in order to determine the residual lifetime. The characteristics and the behaviour of the Polymer Modified Asphalt sections on two national highways in the Netherlands will also be compared with those of reference sections in which standard bitumen has been used.
