- W60581630 abstract "The avian community from four birch forests in the Cantabrian Mountains, Spain, were inventoried using the line transect method during spring and winter; censured areas totaled 70.5 and 79 ha respectively. The breeding community was varied and abundant, including 40 species having a total density of 81.9 birds/10 ha; predominant species were Erithacus rubecula, Troglodytes troglodytes, Parus ater. During winter there was a considerable reduction in the bird population. The number of species decreased to 14 while density dropped to 12,6 birds/10 ha; predominant species at this time were Pyrrhula pyrrhula, Parus caeruleus, Parus ater, Parus cristatus. In comparison with other studies in Europe, a decrease in the qualitative composition of the avian community was observed between the Cantabrian birch forest and those of Great Britain and northern Europe as a result of the difference in latitude. However, the greatest similarity was found between northern Spain and Great Britain. Some species are of special conservation interest such as the Capercaillie, which is dependent upon the Cantabrian birch forests for the survival." @default.
