- W606081282 abstract "The author outlines Renault's approach to improving fuel efficiency whilst retaining low emissions. The high swirl combustion chamber concept, based on air jets in the vicinity of the intake valves, is applied to future 12 valve 2 litre Renault engines. This has improved fuel consumption by 8%. In diesel engines, particulate emissions have been reduced by 30%. Nitrogen oxides however remain a problem. The author suggests that fuel improvements are needed. Alternative approaches also being considered by Renault are briefly discussed including: a) a two-stroke engine with direct fuel injection system, b) the gas turbine concept, c) electric vehicles, d) the use of natural gas and e) the use of hydrogen.
