- W606645557 abstract "Urban arterials constitute only fifteen per cent of the road network in South African cities, yet sixty per cent of road accidents take place on them. One-third of the accidents occur between intersections, and this paper attempts to identify the environmental factors contributing to the accidents on the road sections. Sixty-seven km of urban arterials, comprising eight routes, were surveyed in four cities: Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and East London. Environmental and accident data were collected and speed and traffic volumes were measured. These variables were manipulated and analyzed, using regression analysis. The principal findings were: (1) an equation able to predict the number of accidents/annum was derived (r2 = 0,52). (2) The length of the road section has a considerable effect on the accident estimate, and it is recommended that arterial intersections should be spaced not less than 250 M apart. (3) Traffic volume has little effect on the number of accidents. Thus, a small number of heavily trafficked arterials is safer than a larger number of more lightly trafficked arterials. (4) Direct access to arterials should be restricted. (5) One-way streets are safer than two-way streets. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
