- W606647166 abstract "This paper describes the design and construction of the Myton steel box girder cable stayed swing bridge over the River Hull. Horizontal alignment of the bridge was determined by land availability and resulted in a crossing of the river at a skew of 22 degrees. In order to minimize the daily requirements for opening the bridge, the bridge's vertical alignment was kept as high as possible, and its construction depth kept to a minimum. The loading specification adopted conformed to the current British Standards for trunk road bridges. In addition to the basic HA loading, the abnormal 1800 kN HB vehicle was allowed for. Design for steelwork was in accordance with the Interim Design Working Rules (IDWR) (now BS 5400). The structure is a 32 m wide cable stayed bridge carrying dual three lane carriageways and footways. Its spans are 55.6m and 28.4m. The navigational clearance between fenders is 30m. The nose end of the main span is skewed by 22 degrees. The backend is radiussed in plan. The deck comprises twin steel box girders interconnected by cross girders at 3.3m centres and surmounted by a steel orthotropic deck plate surfaced with mastic asphalt. Transverse box girders are provided at the main pier and at the anchorages for the cable stays in the main block and back span. The torque to skew the bridge is provided by twin hydraulic rams. The bridge substructure consists of: a) 18.5m diameter hollow reinforced concrete main and landing piers founded on precast concrete piles; b) the backspan pier is radiussed in plan; and c) fendering. Substantial greenhart piled fendering is provided along both sides of the navigation channel. The French title for this article is: Le pont Myton a Hull, Royaume-Uni.
